How Close Do PGA Tour Pros Hit It From 30 to 100 Yards?

Average proximity, shots inside 5 and 10 feet, greens hit and strokes to hole out from every 10 yards between 30 and 100, fairway and rough, from 125,921 tracked PGA Tour shots. From 50-59 yards in the fairway: 15.9 ft, 42% inside 10 feet.

Inside 100 yards is where a tour pro is expected to get it close. Here is how close, from 125,921 tracked shots on the PGA Tour, 2021 to 2026: every shot that started between 30 and 100 yards from the hole, in 10-yard steps, from the fairway and from the rough.

From 50-59 yards a fairway wedge finishes 15.9 feet from the hole on average and inside 10 feet 42% of the time. Half of them finish inside 12 feet; the average sits higher because the misses pull it up. From 90-100 yards the average is 18.8 feet and only 30% finish inside 10 feet.

The gains come fastest close in. Between 30 and 60 yards every 10 yards costs about 2.3 feet of proximity; between 60 and 100 yards it is about 0.7 feet.

The half wedge from 50 yards is often called the hardest shot in golf. On tour it is still easier than a full wedge from further back: from 50-59 yards in the fairway the ball finishes 15.9 feet away on average and takes 2.65 strokes to hole out, against 18.8 feet and 2.75 strokes from 90-100 yards.

Strokes to hole out is the column that settles what a yard is worth: 2.50 from 30-39 yards and 2.75 from 90-100 yards, about 0.04 of a stroke for every 10 yards.

From 50-59 yards the rough adds 10 feet and 0.22 strokes. From 90-100 yards it adds 15 feet and 0.23 strokes. From the rough, only 14% of shots from 90-100 yards finish inside 10 feet, against 30% from the fairway.

How often the putt that follows goes in is in how often PGA Tour pros make putts. For 100 yards and beyond, see approach proximity by distance, and for what happens when the green is missed, what a missed green costs.

How this is measured

Every shot that started 30 to 100 yards from the hole, on any hole and at any stroke, other than tee shots: second shots on short par 4s, third shots on par 5s and recoveries alike. The starting distance is where the previous shot came to rest, not the length of the shot itself.

"Fairway" is the fairway; "rough" includes the first cut and native areas. Bunker shots are left out, because a greenside bunker shot from 30 yards and a fairway bunker shot from 90 are not the same shot.

Proximity is the distance from the hole after the shot, misses included, so a shot that misses the green counts at its distance from the hole. A holed shot counts as zero. Shots that finish within about a foot are recorded without a distance; they count at 11 inches rather than being dropped. Shots that finished farther from the hole than they started, lay-backs and recording errors, are left out: 1.1% of the sample. Strokes to hole out counts the shot and every one after it, on holes where every stroke was recorded.
