Ball speed is the number every launch monitor puts at the top of the
screen, and the one most worth understanding, because it is an output.
Club speed is how fast you swing. Ball speed is what the ball actually
leaves with, and it is what distance is built from.
Published tour figures for it get copied between articles without a source.
So here is the measured version, from 235,506 tracked drives by
600 players across the 2023 to 2026
seasons.
The tour average is 173.1 mph
Across every tracked drive: 173.1 mph of ball speed, from
116.0 mph of club speed, launching at 10.2 degrees
with 2,619 rpm of spin, peaking 103 feet in the air
and finishing 300 yards away.
Among players with at least 100 tracked drives since
2025, the field average is 173.8 mph, and the
spread is wider than the averages suggest:

What a mile per hour is actually worth
Comparing players against each other: 1.44 yards per mph of ball
speed, and the relationship is close to a straight line.

Every step up the speed ladder buys about the same seven yards. There is no
plateau, no point where extra speed stops paying, at least nowhere inside
the range tour players occupy.
Ball speed alone explains 93% of the variation in how far
players hit it. For a single variable against something as noisy as
driving distance, that is an unusually tight fit, and it is the central fact
about distance at this level.
A note on why you may have seen the opposite claim. Run the same comparison
across individual swings rather than players and a diminishing-returns
curve appears. It is an artifact: within one player's drives the slow ones
are mishits, not slow swings, and a mishit loses distance out of proportion
to the speed it lost. Comparing players removes that, and the curve
straightens out.
The number that does not vary: smash factor
Smash factor is ball speed divided by club speed, the efficiency of the
strike. Tour average is 1.500.
The average is not the story. The spread is:
Standard deviation: 0.021
10th percentile: 1.47
90th percentile: 1.52
Almost nothing separates tour players on strike quality. From the 10th
percentile to the 90th is about 0.05, on a number
whose practical ceiling is roughly 1.50. Essentially every player on tour
finds the middle of the face essentially every time.
That reframes what distance on tour is made of, and it lines up with the
93% figure above. It is not that the long hitters strike it
better. Everyone strikes it well. They swing faster. Efficiency is table
stakes at this level and speed is the only real variable.
How we isolate drivers, and how we know it works
Tracked tee shots include 3-wood and iron lay-ups, which would drag every
number here in the wrong direction. There is no club label in the data, so
we cut on spin: under 3,500 rpm, which separates drivers (2,000 to
3,000) from 3-woods (3,500 to 4,000) and irons (4,000 and up).
The check on whether that works is external. The PGA Tour publishes its own
driving distance average, and it sits near 299 yards. Our filtered set
averages 299.9 yards, with launch and spin landing on the
published driver profile too. A filter that reproduces the tour's own number
to within a yard is picking out the right shots.
The caveats
Radar coverage begins in 2023, so nothing here supports a
long-run trend claim. "Has the tour got faster" needs data we do not have.
Not every tee shot carries radar. These are the tracked ones, and
coverage varies by event.
The driver cut is a proxy, not a club label. A low-spin 3-wood can pass
it and a high-spin driver can fail it. It is right on average, which is what
the averages here need it to be.
